What Content Formats Work Best for GEO? 8 Formats AI Search Cites (with Examples)

Minimalist featured image with the title "What Content Formats Work Best for GEO? 8 Formats AI Search Cites (with Examples)" on a dark navy background with blue and cyan gradient accents.

The content formats that work best for GEO (generative engine optimization) are the ones AI search engines can lift as a complete answer: direct definitions, step-by-step how-to guides, comparison tables, ranked lists, FAQ sections, original data and statistics, glossaries, and expert quotes. What they share is structure: one question per section, the answer first, and facts that can be quoted without extra context.

Why content format matters in AI search

Format matters because AI search engines don’t cite whole pages; they cite passages. That changes how you create content and optimize your content for AI visibility. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Mode a question, the AI model runs retrieval across many pages, picks the passages that answer each part of the query, and writes AI-generated responses with a few citations.

The same AI retrieval logic applies whether the answer shows up in Google AI Overviews or in ChatGPT answers. Google calls the search part of this “query fan-out”: issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources while the answer is generated.

A well-structured page gives the model clean pieces to retrieve and quote. A wall of text forces it to parse, summarize and guess, and it will usually cite a clearer source instead. Research behind the term GEO, the GEO paper by Aggarwal et al., found that adding citations, quotations and statistics can boost a source’s visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%.

Format doesn’t replace quality, and it doesn’t replace traditional SEO. Format is the kind of change you can make in any SEO strategy without new backlinks or domain authority. Google’s guidance on AI features says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: the same SEO basics apply, including text content, structured data that matches the visible text, internal links and good page experience.

The 8 best content formats for AI search

1. Direct-answer definitions

Definitions are the most quotable format for “what is” queries. Put a one- or two-sentence definition right under a question heading, then expand.

Example:

What is keyword clustering? Keyword clustering is grouping keywords that share the same search intent so one page can rank for all of them.

Tips: name the term in the first words, avoid “it” or “this” at the start, and keep the first sentence under about 30 words so it works on its own.

2. Step-by-step how-to guides

How-to guides answer “how do I…” queries, which users ask AI tools all the time. Numbered steps are easy for AI to extract in order and easy for users to follow.

Example: “How to allow AI crawlers: 1. Open robots.txt. 2. Add a rule for each crawler. 3. Check your CDN firewall. 4. Test access.”

Tips: one action per step, start each step with a verb, state the outcome. Keep the steps in an ordered HTML list, not in paragraphs.

3. Comparison tables

Comparison tables answer “X vs Y” and “which is better” queries. AI engines can read rows and columns directly and reuse attributes in their answers.

Example:

SERP-based clustering Semantic clustering
Groups by Shared ranking URLs Meaning
Best for Page-level accuracy Speed on large lists

Tips: use a real HTML table (not an image), keep the same attributes for every option, and add one sentence above the table with the bottom line. See our guide to high-converting comparison pages.

4. Ranked lists (“best X for Y”)

Lists answer “best” and “top” queries, which AI tools answer with short recommendations. A clear list with a reason per item is easy to summarize.

Tips: lead each item with its name and the use case it fits (“best for agencies”), then one or two sentences of evidence. State your selection criteria, and update the list when facts change: freshness matters for “best” queries.

5. FAQ sections

FAQ sections answer the follow-up questions that query fan-out generates. Each question works as its own retrievable passage.

Tips: use the exact questions users ask (People Also Ask, Search Console queries, sales calls), answer in 2-4 sentences, and make each answer understandable without the rest of the page. Note that Google removed FAQ rich results from Search in 2026, so add FAQs for users and AI answers, not for a SERP feature. FAQPage schema is still valid markup if it matches the visible text.

6. Original data and statistics

Original data is one of the strongest formats for getting cited, because it’s information the model can’t find elsewhere. Surveys, benchmarks, internal usage data and small experiments all count.

Example pattern: “We analyzed [number] SaaS blog posts in [month, year]: [X]% had no direct answer in the first paragraph.” Fill it with your own data, method and date.

Tips: put the key number in a short sentence, state the sample and date, and keep a methods section. Our guide on original research covers how to plan a study.

7. Glossaries and term pages

Glossaries collect definitions for a whole topic, which helps AI systems connect related entities and helps you build topical authority. Each term gets a short definition and a link to the deeper article.

Tips: one H2 or H3 per term, alphabetical or grouped by topic, and internal links to the full guides. Glossaries are especially useful for complex topics, where LLMs need clear definitions to explain a concept.

8. Expert quotes and opinion

Thought leadership content with named experts adds the experience and expertise signals (E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness), and quotations were one of the methods that raised visibility in the GEO research.

Tips: quote real people with their role, keep quotes short and specific, and add a clear opinion rather than a generic statement. See how to write quotable statements.

Which content format should you use for each query type?

Match the format to what the user asks. A quick map:

Query type Example query Best format
Definition “what is AEO” Direct-answer definition, glossary
Process “how to allow GPTBot” Step-by-step guide
Comparison “GEO vs SEO” Comparison table
Recommendation “best keyword clustering tools” Ranked list with criteria
Follow-up questions “does schema help AI search” FAQ section
Evidence “how many searches are zero-click” Original data, statistics

Most useful content combines formats: a definition at the top, a how-to or comparison in the body, and FAQs at the end. That’s the pattern we use across our blog content, not only on SEO content pages.

How to structure any format so AI can parse it

  • Answer first. Put the direct answer in the first paragraph of the page and of each section. Our article on the inverted pyramid method explains why.
  • One question per heading. Use question-shaped headings that match how users ask AI tools.
  • Use real HTML. Lists as lists, tables as tables, text as text, so retrieval doesn’t depend on images or scripts.
  • Self-contained passages. Each section should make sense if it’s quoted alone.
  • Schema markup that matches the page. Article schema for posts and Product schema for products help search engines understand the page; HowTo schema no longer produces a rich result in Google, so treat schema as a description, not a shortcut.
  • Visuals that support text. Google recommends supporting text with high-quality images and videos; keep key facts in the text too, with alt text and captions.

Common mistakes with AI-friendly formats

  • Burying the answer after a long introduction.
  • Tables as images that AI can’t read reliably.
  • Thin FAQs with one-line answers that add nothing.
  • Uncited statistics copied from other blogs. If you can’t find the original source, don’t use the number.
  • One format for everything. A listicle can’t answer a “how to” query well, and a how-to won’t win “best” queries.

How to check if your formats get cited

Track AI citations with a simple routine. Run your target questions across ChatGPT and Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode once a month, note which of your pages are cited and which passage is quoted. Compare cited and ignored pages: the difference is often format, not topic. In Google Search Console, AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is included in the Performance report under the Web search type. For a full setup, see Measuring LLM Visibility.

How Contadu helps you create AI-friendly content formats

Contadu helps you choose the right topics and questions and write SEO-optimized pages structured for both search engines and AI search, so your SEO and content strategy work as one:

  • Plan the questions: the Content Strategy module groups keywords into clusters and shows content gaps, so you know which definitions, how-tos and comparisons are missing.
  • Cover the topic: the Content Writer suggests NLP terms based on top competitors in Google and analyzes entities, so each section covers what AI and search engines expect.
  • Draft faster: generative AI templates on all plans help you create first drafts of FAQs, definitions and step-by-step sections, which you then edit and fact-check.
  • Publish consistently: WordPress integration and unlimited team members keep writers and editors in one workflow.

FAQ

What content works best in AI search?

Content that answers a specific question clearly and early works best: definitions, step-by-step guides, comparison tables, ranked lists, FAQs and original data. It also needs to be crawlable, accurate and from a source the AI system trusts.

What format is best for AI to read?

Clean HTML text with clear headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables. AI systems parse text more reliably than content inside images, PDFs or scripts.

Which content formats are most likely to be cited by AI search engines?

Formats that can be quoted as a complete answer: one-sentence definitions, numbered steps, table rows, list items with a reason, and specific statistics with a source. Long narrative paragraphs are harder to quote.

Do videos and infographics work in AI search?

They help users, and Google recommends supporting text with high-quality images and videos. But put the key facts in text as well, with captions and alt text, so AI systems can read them.

Does FAQ schema still help?

Google no longer shows FAQ rich results in Search (removed in 2026). FAQPage schema is still valid markup when it matches the visible text, but the value of an FAQ now comes from the answers themselves.

Is SEO still worth it with AI?

Yes. Content marketing still starts with keyword research and helpful pages. Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond SEO best practices, and AI tools that search the web can only cite pages they can find. Good SEO is the base of good GEO.

How long should content be for AI search?

There’s no ideal length. What matters is that each section answers one question completely. A 600-word page with clear answers can be cited more than a 4,000-word guide that never gets to the point.

Do content strategies need to change for tools like ChatGPT and Gemini?

Content strategies need fewer generic posts and more pages that answer specific questions with evidence. The topics stay similar; the structure and the depth of each answer change.

Are listicles still effective for SEO and AI?

Yes, for “best” and “top” queries, when each item has a clear reason, real evidence and up-to-date facts. Thin listicles without criteria are rarely cited.

AI Crawlers List 2026: OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and How to Allow Them

October 13, 2026 Iza No comments yet

AI crawlers fall into three groups: training bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, CCBot), AI search bots (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot) and user-triggered fetchers (ChatGPT-User, Claude-User, Perplexity-User). To appear in AI search answers, allow the search bots in robots.txt; blocking the training bots is a separate business decision and does not remove you from AI search. Last updated: October […]

GDPR and Content: What Marketing Teams Actually Need to Know

September 30, 2026 Iza No comments yet

Semantic Summary Idea: GDPR shapes far more of a content marketing workflow than most teams realize  not just email marketing, but every gated ebook, every cookie-driven analytics dashboard, and every form collecting a name and email address. Challenge: content teams often treat GDPR as legal’s problem, then discover mid-campaign that a lead magnet, a newsletter […]
